Heat is damaging to your console and you should keep it well ventilated. Heat causes the mother board to flex (and long story short) which loosens the processor causing the red ring of death.

While Microsoft reported only a 5% console failure rate, retailers were reporting rates of 30%. Microsoft did admit "the first 11.6 million consoles sold did have a 'flaw' that could cause the device to fail". They never updated their failure rate statistic. By the way, if you can't tell, that 'flaw' was the heat sink being too small. The new elite Xbox 360 models apparently have an epoxy resin that holds the motherboard in place and stops the flexing.

The fall 2006 update caused some systems to fail and boot only the screen of death. Tsk tsk...

Some good news: you can make money and get great deals from the red ring of death

How? Go on eBay. Tons of people are selling their system because it has the red ring of death and they don't know how to fix it. When you learn to fix them you can buy these red light systems for like $60, fix it, and resell it for $200. At the very least you can buy a cheap system and keep it for yourself.
